Associate Professor Christine Burdeniuk is a highly experienced cardiologist with special interest in heart failure and transplantation. She is known for her thorough, thoughtful approach and commitment to helping patients understand and actively manage their heart health.
Christine completed her medical degree at Flinders University in 2000, and undertook advanced training in Cardiology and Echocardiography at Flinders Medical Centre. She then completed further specialist fellowship training in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, gaining expertise in managing patients with complex heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, and transplant medicine.
Since returning to Adelaide in 2009, she has led the development of structured Advanced Heart Failure services within the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN), including establishing a tertiary-level heart failure service in Mount Gambier. She is closely involved in the assessment and ongoing care of heart transplant recipients in South Australia, including the management of patients awaiting cardiac transplantation.
Alongside her expertise in complex heart conditions, Christine is passionate about prevention and early detection. She advocates for comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment and proactive management of hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and lifestyle risk factors, and believes that meaningful, sustainable lifestyle modification including weight management, dietary optimisation and smoking cessation is fundamental to preventing disease progression and achieving long-term cardiac health.
Christine holds senior executive and statewide leadership roles. She serves as Deputy Director within the SALHN Division of Medicine, Cardiac and Critical Care, and is Clinical Lead of the Commission on Excellence and Innovation in Health (CEIH) Cardiac Care Statewide Clinical Network.
A recognised clinical educator and mentor, she previously served as SALHN Director of Clinical Training (2014–2022). In recognition of her commitment to education, she was awarded Clinical Educator of the Year in South Australia in 2017.
